INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists annually honors select professional chapters for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the journalism profession through its Outstanding Chapter of the Year awards. This year’s winners are the Florida Pro Chapter and Cincinnati Pro Chapter, which stood out for creativity in programming and advocacy efforts.

The Large Chapter of the Year award is open to chapters with 75 or more members, and the Small Chapter of the Year award is open to chapters with fewer than 75 members.

Large Chapter of the Year

This year’s winner of Large Chapter of the Year is the Florida Pro Chapter. It is receiving the award for the second year in a row, after a three-way tie last year.

Florida was chosen because of the vast diversity of its programming and as a shout out to its attempt, albeit unsuccessful, to trademark the phrase “fake news.” They also presented their Fake News Game Show news literacy program to public libraries and other public venues around the state.

Small Chapter of the Year

This year’s winner of Small Chapter of the Year the Cincinnati Pro Chapter.

Cincinnati was chosen for programs such as three active shooter trainings, for working with other media organizations and for working with law enforcement on First Amendment/FOIA matters.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Support excellent journalism and fight for your right to know. Become a member, give to the Legal Defense Fund or give to the SPJ Foundation.
