INDIANAPOLIS – The JOVRNALISM Staff from University of Southern California, Annenberg, the national winner for Immersion Journalism, is the winner of the MOEy Best in Show.

JOVRNALISM earned the MOEy — the Society of Professional Journalists top student journalism award — for its reporting "Homeless realities.” JOVRNALISM worked with members of Los Angeles’ homeless community to tell powerful, immersive stories using emerging technologies that include drones, 360 video, augmented reality and photogrammetry.

Each year, student journalists compete regionally in print, TV, radio and online categories. First-place winners advance to compete nationally and are eligible for the MOEy. The best in show award was chosen from more than 3,100 entries in the SPJ competition.

This year, SPJ made significant additions to its Mark of Excellence Awards contest, adding categories for 360 video and data visualization, as well as a category to recognize collaborations from students at multiple colleges or universities.

The finalists for the MOEy are:
• Saffeya Ahmed from Virginia Commonwealth University for “White supremacy movements spark rise in religion-based hate” in the Data Visualization.
• WUFT News staff from University of Florida for “After the Eye” in Best All-Around Television News Magazine.
• Isabel Lohman and Mawa Iqbal from University of Missouri for “After semester of tumult, Columbia parents and officials still at odds over police in schools” in Radio In-Depth Reporting.
• George Stoia from University of Oklahoma for “Concussions, consequences and conscience: OU great Rickey Dixon reflects on career that’s killing him” in Sports Writing, Large School Division.
