BALTIMORE – Ohio University has been selected by the Society of Professional Journalists to receive the Outstanding Campus Chapter award for the third year in a row. This award honors chapters for their commitment to SPJ’s mission and the profession of journalism.
The chapter is being honored for their dedication to SPJ’s pillars and providing educational opportunities for their members.
Their programs and events this year included campus discussions about women in journalism, experiences with sexual harassment, journalism ethics, coverage of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and requesting public records.
As additional advocacy efforts, Ohio University has spoken out against a university policy limiting free speech, gave money to support a regional conference and volunteered for a community cleanup and food drive.
The chapter was honored today at the Student Union during the 2018 Excellence in Journalism conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
The runner up is DePaul University.
SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press.
