The SPJ Foundation acts as the primary supporting foundation to the Society of Professional Journalists and, as such, reviews funding proposals from SPJ as its first partner.

The SPJ Foundation also has long-standing partnerships with other journalism organizations and seeks to support innovative proposals.

The Foundation specifically seeks proposals for projects and programs that promote core missions of the Society, including freedom of information and ethics, and serve and appeal to a diverse audience.

The Foundation primarily promotes programs and projects rather than endowments, general operating expenses or infrastructure (hardware, software, staffing, etc), or general operating expenses within organizations.

The foundation is prohibited from using grant money for college or university overhead expenses.

Guidelines for State & Regional FOI/First Amendment Organizations

Preference will be given to regional or multi-state groups rather than those serving only one state, although possible national impact in a very large state will be considered.

Preference will be given to programs/projects with multiple funding sources.

Applicants should demonstrate evidence of partnerships with appropriate groups, especially with SPJ entities such as SPJ chapters and mission-related committees and communities.
