The 2006 SPJ Region 1 Conference

Friday, March 31 - Sunday, April 2
On the campus of Rutgers University-Newark, New Jersey

If you’re a student learning your craft or a professional looking to meet fellow journalists, brush up your skills, and hear some of the most provocative speakers debate some of today’s most provocative journalism topics, you owe it to yourself to join us at Rutgers University-Newark. It’s the first time in six years that the SPJ Region 1 Conference has been held in the Garden State, just minutes by car, train, bus or subway from the world’s media capital, New York City.

From covering crime on the street to covering corporate malfeasance in the suites, there’s something to learn for everybody in the news business. We’ll be breaking down the hottest issues: anonymous sourcing and protecting sources, the role of blogs, access and denials of access to public records, diversity and the lack thereof in the newsroom. There’ll be panels on covering the growing immigrant communities, both in English and in the foreign-language press, and on covering the War in Iraq from the suburban newsroom. We’ll talk about celebrity journalism, and we’ll talk about the murky future of newspapers and other "old" media.

Scheduled panelists include Walt Kane, anchor of News 12 New Jersey’s I-team, Suzanne Smalley and Donovan Slack of the Boston Globe, Jeff Mays of the Newark Star-Ledger; Mary Anne Giordano of the New York Times, Iraq War veteran Lynn Washington, U.S. Supreme Court expert Dru Riley Evarts of Ohio University, Sara Wood of Market Intelligence, Marion Burns of Private Equity Insider, Ken Serrano of the Central New Jersey Home News Tribune, Karen Bosley, dismissed faculty adviser to Ocean County College's Viking News student newspaper, Elizabeth Llorente, the Record of Hackensack.

In addition, Friday's program will include special programming of interest to journalism students and entry-level professionals, including a job fair and resume/clip package critiques. Saturday’s program will include Bloomberg professional training -- two sessions with a trainer from Bloomberg News on how to spot news in a morass of numbers, and how to write it in a way that demands attention.

We’re also planning an evening reception at the Ballantine House, the 1885 Victorian home of Newark beer magnate John Holme Ballantine, on the grounds of the Newark Museum just a block from the Rutgers campus. On Saturday, our Mark of Excellence awards luncheon – honoring the best in college journalism – will feature an address by TKTKTKTK, and on Saturday night, XX seats have been reserved on a first-come, first-served basis for a performance of Chicago, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center , four blocks from the campus.

For those needing accommodations, rooms have been reserved at the Robert Treat Hotel, a lovingly restored downtown Newark landmark, for $95 a night, a discount from the regular rate of $125.
