Apply to be a trainer

Application deadline: January 20, 2017

In 2016, the Society of Professional Journalists partnered with the Google News Lab to bring digital tool training to over 4,000 journalists across 36 states. With the increasing demand of these trainings, the partnership is seeking more trainers.

SPJ and the Google News Lab are seeking experienced trainers who are available to travel to train journalists on a variety of Google tools which are helpful to journalists.

These trainers represent both SPJ and the Google News Lab and are expected to provide high caliber training to journalists in newsrooms, at conferences and at workshops.

SPJ and Google News Lab are looking for applicants who:

– Will commit to serving as a trainer for least 12 months
– Have the flexibility to travel domestically during the week and weekends
– Have the flexibility to spend time preparing customized presentations for trainings based on existing templates
– Work well independently in order to prepare quality training programs and workshops in collaboration with SPJ and the News Lab staff
– Are dependable
– Are digitally-minded
– Have demonstrated training and presentation experience
– Are from various locations around the U.S.
– Bring diversity to the trainer pool
– Conduct themselves in a professional manner
– Have completed their undergraduate degree
– Can attend a training session Feb 26-28 at the Google office in Boulder, Colo.
– Are willing to join SPJ if not currently a member

Trainers are paid per training, with expectations of training at least once per month.

After your application is reviewed, a phone interview will be scheduled for the week of January 23rd if there is interest in talking with you further about the position. If you are selected, you will be asked to attend a training session at the Google HQ in Boulder, Colo., Feb 26-28.

To learn more about the training program itself — including what the program covers and who is conducting the training today — follow this link.

The application deadline has expired, but we will take applications again in the future, so please stay tuned!
