Winning Pictures

The National Press Photographers Association has finished its 2008 competition, and the winners show us the best of photojournalism on the Web. John Moore of Getty Images captured first place in the still photo category for a portfolio showing the causes and results of conflicts from America to Pakistan to Iraq. First place for best multimedia package went to soulofathens.com, which offers a visual, audio and interactive portrait of the poorest county in Ohio. The Washington Post's impressive "Fixing D.C.'s Schools: One School's Struggle" project won first prize for best audio slideshow among large papers. Roanoke.com's "Street Preacher" earned first place in the audio slideshow category for smaller news sites while Shane Bauer's remarkable "Hotel Poverty" won among independent sites. HoopGurlz.com snagged first prize in the sports audio slideshow division, while Roanoke.com captured another first place finish for "Ruckus in the Cage" in the sports photo gallery division.
