A Phenomenal Story

This Seattle Times series began with a sports editor's coin flip to decide who would write a single column about a coach's daughter fighting cancer. Jerry Brewer won the flip, and since then the column has grown into a moving account of a family's faith and courage that editor-at-large Michael R. Fancher calls a Seattle Times "phenomenon." Since May, nine installments of "A Prayer for Gloria" have appeared, plus Brewer's insightful journal, photo galleries and audio slide shows. Readers have responded with 2,500 messages, the most Fancher has seen in almost 30 years at The Times. Thank you to Lena Tibbelin for recommending this series.

We have a sad update: Gloria died on Sept. 21.
