Deadly Secrets
Carol Ann Campbell of The Star-Ledger in Newark has written a great story investigating how New Jersey hospitals are able to keep secret the locations of deadly outbreaks of infectious diseases. Campbell's "The Hidden Danger at Hospitals" reveals that state laws allow the hospitals to shield their identities when lethal outbreaks occur, giving consumers no way of knowing how dangerous their hospitals are. The problem, she notes, is growing more acute as at least 100,000 Americans die each year from hospital infections. This is a good example of a story that looks out for the public's interest. Let's hope it makes a difference. Thank you Brian Summers for the tip. www.nj.com/news/ledger/index.ssf?/base/news-11/1179030971309280.xml&coll=1
