The Musician and the Governor

Sally Jacobs of The Boston Globe gives us a rare glimpse into the emotional life of a powerful politician with her profile of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. "Pat's Boy" explores the turbulent relationship between Patrick and his father, Pat Patrick, a renowned jazz saxophonist who played with Duke Ellington, John Coltrane and the Sun Ra Arkestra. Jacobs guides us through the estrangement of father and son after Pat was kicked out of the family home when Deval was only 4, and describes their eventual difficult reconciliation. Enhancing the story are audio clips of Pat Patrick's music and a video, narrated by Jacobs and produced by Scott LaPierre, which includes great clips of Patrick playing his sax in a Chicago nightclub. www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2007/03/25/patrick_shaped_by_fathers_absence/?page=1

Mr. Patrick is not listed in the NewDESOR discography as having recorded with Ellington, nor is he shown in Peter MacHare's list of Ellington sidemen.

I'd be interested in knowing when and for how long he was in the Ellington band, and if he made any recordings with Duke, I'd appreciate learning which ones they were.
