The Winner

Last week Lane DeGregory of the St. Petersburg Times won the National Journalism Award for human interest writing. On Sunday her remarkable talent was on display again. In "His Second Self," DeGregory and Lorri Helfand wrote about Steve Stanton, the city manager of suburban Largo who revealed that he wanted to become a woman. While this story had plenty of potential for tawdry salaciousness, DeGregory and Helfand unfolded the chapters of Stanton's inner and outward journey in a nonjudgmental way while creating tension over how well Stanton's wife, son and community would accept his desire to change gender.

St. Petersburg Times reporter Lane DeGregory - a remarkably gifted writer - is a woman, not a "he." She, deservingly, won the award in question. Not he.

Just so you know ...
