Shabby Treatment

It's not often that a newspaper series produces results as quickly as The Washington Post's "The Other Walter Reed." Last Sunday Post reporters Dana Priest and Anne Hull described the deplorable conditions endured by injured soldiers at the Army's top medical facility. Priest and Hull's four-month investigation showed that troops recovering from wounds sustained in Iraq and Afghanistan were kept in Reed's outpatient facilities amid cockroaches, mouse droppings, mold, ceiling holes and bureaucratic indifference. Within a week, Army and Defense Department leaders had promised to fix conditions at the hospital's outpatient center, and repairs had already started. This is journalism that makes a difference. www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/linkset/2007/02/21/LI2007022100671.html
