ER Adventures

I'm not sure if any newspaper on the continent makes as much commitment to deeply reported, long-form narratives as The Hamilton Spectator in Ontario, Canada. This week The Spectator is doing it again with "Emergency" by reporter Jon Wells and photographer Sheryl Nadler. Their story describes the efforts of doctors, nurses and paramedics as they try to save the life of Justine Douwes, a 17-year-old who comes to Hamilton General Hospital's ER after a terrible car accident. Through his attention to detail, Wells succeeds in giving us a close-up look at the work and lives of the people in the ER, and as a result I can't wait to find out what happens in the next installments. A big thank you to Mary Nesbitt for pointing me to this series.

News Gems has featured Wells' work once before for his thrilling "Post Mortem" detective saga. Do you think more newspapers should try to run narratives like these?
