Supreme Court Continues to Cut Students' Speech Rights
The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled 6-3 against a student who had been punished by high school officials because they did not like the words on a banner he held up when he was off school grounds.
Here's a version of the story from
CNN.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority in what has become known as the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case. Joining him were Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Clarence Thomas, Stephen Breyer and Samuel Alito.
Justice John Paul Stevens was joined in a dissent by David Souter and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
In his dissent, Stevens accused the majority of "inventing out of whole cloth" a rule that eliminates First Amendment protections for students if administrators believe their speech advocates drug use.
