Broadcast Journalism in Germany

This is my first posting for the SPJ International Committee, so allow me to briefly introduce myself. I'm Butler Cain, and I'm the news director of Alabama Public Radio in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (www.apr.org). I was hoping to use this forum to share some audio interviews I've conducted with broadcasters from around the world (hey -- I'm a radio guy).

Several months ago, I went to Germany as a guest of the RIAS Berlin Kommission. It's an exchange program for German and American journalists. As a result of that trip, Alabama Public Radio was able to return the favor a few months later and serve as a host for a German journalist.

Simone von der Forst is a freelance broadcast journalist in Germany. She is a news anchor and reporter for radio stations YouFM (www.you-fm.de) and 1Live (www.1live.de). In this interview, Simone discusses the shortage of international news coverage within America and the public broadcasting systems in both countries. You can hear that interview here:

On my next post, I'll share what I learned during my weeklong trip to Germany.
