Mine safety a public concern

THE SALT Lake Tribune and several other news organizations, including SPJ, are
trying to persuade a federal judge to allow public observation of the
government’s investigation of the Crandall Canyon Mine disaster that
killed nine miners in August.
The U.S. Labor Department has
refused to let the public attend interviews, saying it’s no different
from any criminal investigation.
It is very different.

The Tribune appeal is being supported by The Associated Press, CNN,
the Deseret Morning News and the Utah Media Coalition, a group of
newspapers, TV stations and SPJ
Department of Labor officials act as if there is no precedent for conducting the public’s business before the citizenry.
