I am the Freedom of Information Committee chairman for the Society of Professional Journalists. I’m a former newspaper journalist and current teacher and researcher in journalism and FOI at the University of Arizona. I believe that access to public records is essential in a democracy for creating an informed electorate. While some information can and should remain secret to protect individual privacy and national secret, transparency is the best disinfectant for government corruption and waste.
