Bridge Breached, Not Credibility
WCCO Radio Managing Editor Steve Murphy says one of the things journalists can learn from the bridge collapse in Minneapolis is to "think ethics." Jill Geisler summarizes the point from an interview:
Murphy cautions
about the "experts" stations may put on the air at times like this. He
says people wanted to share theories on air about the cause of the
collapse, and he’s proud "we didn’t get into wild speculation." He
suggests that at the onset of a big story like this, stations focus on
the public service aspect of their coverage: immediate safety, places
to avoid, alternate routes to take. Vet your experts to make certain
they are credible.
