The diva of diversity

Want to keep up with what's going on in the world of diversity in general and diversity in news coverage in particular? Best way is to get plugged in to LaBarbara Bowman, the hardest working journalist in diversity. She emails countless journalists regularly about training opportunities; she informs editors about U.S. Census Bureau data that could turn into good stories; she writes a column about diversity.

And she's a pleasant person, and a World War II buff.

To contact LaBarbara, known to most as simply "Bobbi": 703-453-1126. That's for her office at the American Society of Newspaper Editors, where she's the director of diversity. Or try her in cyberspac: bowmanb@asne.org.

I'm not Bobbi's agent, but I am a good friend. (And she has a bunch of them.) I just think that you'll be better informed about diversity if you follow Bobbi's work.

Does Ms Bowman have a blog? Or online column for an eZine/online newspaper? I'd like to subscribe to it. I think whatever info she has regarding diversity is very valuable for all who wish to write about the subject.

I have a workplace diversity blog myself. And I try to post relevant ideas and articles regarding diversity and the benefits we can get when it's applied to work.

I may be a little slow, but what (and why) is there still such an outcry for diversity in the news room? Many major newspapers insist on hiring journalists from outside the community because of the out-of-date misconception that they will be too entrenched in the players on their beat. So, if the newsroom wants to have the news staff reflect the readers -- why hire outsiders?

My background is Polish and Lithuanian (second generation). There is a growing Polish and Lithuanian community growing in my community. My grandparents used to be discriminated against by every other ethnic group in the community. Should I be able to go to the editors of the local newspaper and tell them they should show more Polish and Lithuanian diversity in my local newspaper? I've tried and was laughed at for my foolish notion.

Is there an ethnic group in the country who is being prevented from going to school for journalism? My family were dirt-poor textile workers who didn't go to college. I got my journalism experience from editors of the local small-town newspaper who served as my mentor. Using student loans that are available to anyone, I was able to get my college education. I've taught journalism classes where students of all colors, religious backgrounds, cultures, and sexual preferences were represented. Anyone who was interested in learning how to write for a newspaper got my attention. It didn't matter to me what their "diversity quotient" was.

Would someone please tell me what groups we're trying to get represented in our news rooms -- especially what groups feel they are being prevented from being journalists? And what ethnic diversity are we trying to achieve? Or are we trying to demonstrate that some people in this country want to maintain an us-versus-them mentality when it comes to committing good journalism.
